Plant Photographs 1 - Snowdrops, a Fanfare for Spring PDF Print E-mail

Renishaw Hall held an event in February 2009 called a "Fanfare for Spring". Thei r gardens had been closed to the public from October 2008 and were not due to open again until April. The event was to herald and see in spring and was a one day event to show the gardens waking up from their long rest.

Snowdrops at Renishaw Hall

This photograph is of a group of snowdrops that have been around for a while and are beginning to wilt and droop, signs to me that winter is over and spring is starting. Snowdrops are the first flush of new growth and I love seeing them wiggle their way up through the dead leaves and, when it's around, snow. But from late February onwards they start to fade and new plants start to take their place. What I was attempting to show here was a group of rather tired snowdrops that were having a bit of a rest, leaning like we all do against a wall.

To capture this picture I rested my camera and lens on the wall a few inches back from the plant. I wanted to show just the one flower in focus and let the remainder provide a background - they too are tired. So opened up the lens to its fullest extent and took several pictures, this one being by far the most pleasing.

Canon 5D Mark II, 100mm f2.8 macro lens. ISO100, f3.5, 1/125sec. Handheld.
